Adobe tick refers to a type of parasite that primarily infests the bodies of livestock animals, particularly cattle, horses, and sheep. Also known as the Western black-legged tick or the deer tick, it belongs to the family Ixodidae and is scientifically classified as Dermacentor andersoni. The name "adobe tick" stems from its inclination to inhabit arid areas, such as those containing adobe clay soil.
These ticks are ectoparasites, meaning they live by feeding on the blood of their hosts. Adobe ticks are typically found in endemic regions of western North America, including parts of the United States and Canada. While both males and females feed on the blood, female ticks often grow significantly larger after engorging themselves. They attach themselves to the skin of animals, often near the head, neck, or ears, and feed until their bodies are fully engorged. Infestations can cause discomfort and irritation to livestock, often leading to excessive scratching, loss of appetite, and reduced productivity.
Adobe ticks are of concern due to their potential role in transmitting diseases to both animals and humans. They are known carriers of pathogens such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, and tularemia. Effective tick prevention and control measures include regular inspection of animals, maintaining clean and tick-free living environments, and, in some cases, the use of acaricides (tick-killing agents) to mitigate infestations.
