Dutch Elm Disease is a devastating and highly contagious fungal disease that affects Elm trees, caused by the fungus Ophiostoma ulmi. This disease received its name due to its origin in the Netherlands during the early 20th century, where it was first identified and studied extensively. The pathogen spreads primarily through the elm bark beetles that carry spores of the fungus from infected trees to healthy ones.
The infection starts by invading the outer sapwood of the tree, which eventually blocks the transportation of nutrients and water throughout the trunk. This results in the yellowing and wilting of leaves, followed by their premature death. As the disease progresses, the tree's branches become dry and brittle, eventually leading to the death of the entire tree within one to several years after initial infection.
