Etymology of MUSCALLONGE
The word "Muscallonge" (also spelled "Muskie" or "Musky") is believed to have originated from the Ojibwe language, which is spoken by the Anishinaabe people, Native Americans in the Great Lakes region of North America. In Ojibwe, the word "maashkinoozhe" means "ugly pike".
The term was later anglicized, and its spelling and pronunciation evolved to "Muscallonge". It is commonly used to refer to a large species of freshwater fish, the Muskellunge (scientific name: Esox masquinongy). This fish is a predatory species found in North America and is highly sought after by anglers for its size and strength.
