A perineural cyst refers to a fluid-filled sac that forms around a peripheral nerve, commonly found in the spine. Also known as Tarlov cysts or sacral nerve root cysts, they are usually benign and asymptomatic. The cyst typically occurs in the sacral region, most often near the nerve roots where they exit the spinal column. However, they can also occur in other regions of the spine.
Perineural cysts are believed to be congenital in nature, forming during fetal development. They are thought to develop from the arachnoid tissue, one of the three membranes that surround the spinal cord and the nerves exiting the spine.
