It consists of four sub-phases: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, chromosomes condense, and the nuclear envelope dissolves. In metaphase, chromosomes align along the cell equator. Anaphase is characterized by the separation of sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell. Finally, in telophase, the nuclear membrane reforms, and chromosomes uncoil.
Lastly, cytokinesis takes place, during which the cytoplasm divides and two daughter cells fully separate. In animal cells, a cleavage furrow forms to pinch the cell membrane, while in plant cells, a cell plate forms to divide the cytoplasm.
