Pterobranchia is a group of small, marine colonial animals belonging to the phylum Hemichordata. They are filter-feeding organisms that reside on the seafloor, often in deep-sea environments, and are characterized by their unique body structures and feeding mechanisms.
The name Pterobranchia is derived from the Greek words pteron, meaning "wing," and brankhia, meaning "gill," which aptly describes their appearance and respiratory system. These animals form colonies of individuals known as zooids, with each zooid being a specialized unit responsible for different functions. The colony is typically composed of a stalk region, connecting organophore rings, and an elongated, tubular structure known as the coenecium.
Pterobranchs possess a U-shaped digestive system, with a mouth located at one end and an anus at the other. They feed by extending a ciliated tentacle called a lophophore, which is covered in tiny hair-like projections known as cilia. The lophophore captures microscopic organic particles suspended in the water, which are then transported towards the mouth for ingestion.
